A: The government of Honduras is working hard to improve safety throughout the country for both citizens and tourists. Safety in most cities are comparable with other big cities around the world. It is advisable not to carry a lot of cash. Store any valuables in your hotel's safe when possible and keep a copy of your important document numbers (passport, visa, travelers checks, etc.) in a safe place.
Q: What should I pack?
A: Packing for Honduras differs depending on where you go. The central plateau and mountainous zones tend to be cool, while the coastal regions are warmer with relatively high humidity. The time of year can also play a part. The rainy season runs from May to October, it is advisable to carry a raincoat. If you go sightseeing bring sturdy hiking boots and wear light, loose clothing, which is great for trekking. Conservative attire is best for smaller towns and the interior of the country while sporty, comfortable beachwear is ideal for resort areas. When traveling to Honduras, bug repellent is usually a good idea in the National Parks and some beaches. Sunscreen is also a must because of Honduran bright sunshine and long days.

A: Seven main Ethnic groups are found in Honduras. The Maya Chorti live throughout the Copan Valley. The Lenca occupy western Honduras. The Tol or Tolupanes or Jicaque live in central Honduras in the department of Yoro. In eastern Honduras the Pech live in the department of Olancho and parts of the Rio Platano in the Mosquitia. In the heart of the Mosquitia live the Tawanka people and throughout the eastern coastal and nearby inland areas live the Moskito people. The Garifuna people are found along the North coast of Honduras and in the Bay Islands.
Q: What languages are spoken in Honduras and the Bay Islands?
A: Spanish is the official language of Honduras. English is spoken in the Bay Islands and in most tourist areas. Traditional languages are still used in some more remote areas of the country such as Olancho and the Mosquitia.
Q: Is the drinking water safe?
A:Tap water is not recommended to drink in Honduras. All good restaurants and hotels will provide purified water or use purified water in food preparation. Purified water can be bought easily throughout the country. top
Q: Is Malaria a problem?
A: Malaria is found intermittently along most of the North Coast of Honduras and sometimes in the Bay Islands, the worse area being the remote Mosquitia. Wearing insect repellant and clothing such as sleeved shirts and pants are a good idea during dawn and dusk hours and in mosquito prone areas even if you are taking preventive medication. Malaria in Honduras is generally of the milder variety, unlike the Asian strain.
