Tranquillo Bay Eco Adventure Lodge

The Concept

The Kimball and Viola families built Tranquilo Bay inside the rainforest overlooking the Caribbean and the beautiful Panamanian jungle. Their central location within the archipelago of Bocas del Toro permits exploration of some of the most biologically diverse areas within Central America. Bocas del Toro, Panama includes an archipelago of some 68 tropical islands which are excellent for beach combing, birding and exploring. Around the many reefs and lagoons you may fish, snorkel and surf. Great for Families

The province of Bocas del Toro hosts two national parks, one of which is a world heritage site. One park, Bastimentos National Marine Park, covers a large portion of the archipelago and is home to a variety of ecosystems which thrive at or around sea level. The other park, Palo Seco Nature Reserve, is on the mainland and reaches through Tranquilo Bay.

The best Bocas del Toro hotel, is your home base to explore the islands and highlands of Western Panama. Guests unpack, settle in and experience our unique tropical location.

The Accommodations

Each of the six cabanas feature a spacious tiled interior with French doors opening to a large, covered elevated porch area. They each have a large bathroom with a walk-in shower. Each cabana has its own water heater and air conditioner. Three cabanas have queen size beds and the other three have two double beds. Each cabana is tastefully and comfortably appointed with locally handcrafted furniture made for Tranquilo Bay. Hammocks and comfortable Adirondack chairs on each porch allow guests to relax and enjoy the view of the ocean or tropical jungle. top

The Main Lodge is where meals and indoor recreational activities take place. The ocean view and elevation over the jungle canopy are incredible. The upstairs balcony is the perfect place to watch the sun rise with your morning coffee and the moon rise in the evening with a cold beverage. The monkeys and birds also travel through on their late afternoon feeding migration. top

A Socially and Environmentally Responsible Lodge

We at Tranquilo Bay believe it is our responsibility to operate with conscientious attention to resource stewardship, thus we designed Tranquilo Bay for our guests. Our guests have an appreciation for nature so we designed for them a lodge, which is luxurious in a way that fits into the beautiful Panamanian rainforest.

In order to maintain the beauty and integrity of the jungle and the adjacent Caribbean Sea, we do or have done the following:·

  • Tranquilo Bay will always be small. We currently have 6 cabanas with plans in the future for 6 more. We are preserving over 80 acres of the 95 acres we have acquired.
  • Tranquilo Bay educates its employees and guests alike about both marine and wild life, soliciting support for protection and preservation of such marine and wild life.
  • Tranquilo Bay's guests come into close contact with indigenous people, marine life, flora and fauna, and the natural setting in which Tranquilo Bay is located. Tranquilo Bay is located in the jungle and accessed only by the ocean. ·
  • Tranquilo Bay was built and is maintained in an eco-friendly manner. We use eco-friendly renewable and recyclable materials (steel and concrete) in constructing our buildings. We limited our use of local hardwoods to combat deforestation. We use a sustainable approach to
    1. our rainwater system in order to protect our guests and the environment (both filtration and UV light sterilization),
    2. our use of chemicals, and
    3. our waste management. Kitchen and garden waste are composted.
  • Tranquilo Bay's activities tread lightly on the land and the ocean using hiking and kayaking to traverse fragile ecosystems.
  • Tranquilo Bay supports the local economy by employing local personnel and purchasing goods, but we do not support the over-fishing of lobsters, conch and octopus, as we will not purchase or serve these locally endangered species in our restaurant.
  • We are currently researching the possibility of a joint venture between government protection agencies, non governmental organizations and private sector tourism based businesses. Donations from participating businesses would be used to fund government and non-governmental employees to enforce current ecological protection laws in the archipelago of Bocas del Toro. top

Jean's Tip

Tranquilo Bay is the best family-friendly lodge I've found in Panama. They have designed the grounds and activities with thoughtful attention to detail. The owners oversee everything, and live and thrive on the property with their own families. I can help you plan a stay at Tranquilo Bay that will satisfy the most diverse family group.

I suggest adding a trip to the Highlands before or after your ocean adventure at Tranquilo Bay. I can design an overland loop tour by flying you into Bocas del Toro and out of David or vice versa. Tranquilo Bay activities such as river kayaking and visiting Willy Mazu's Nature Ranch segue ocean to mountain; turning a transportation day into an escapade!
